Affordable housing and reliable public transit aren’t simply basic needs - they are the foundations of a thriving community. By creating transit-oriented neighborhoods, we are able to meet our residents' needs by offering places they can afford and want to live in, and that connect them to transportation options and opportunities.
Earlier this month, we celebrated the grand opening of Quail Roost Station, an affordable 200-unit transit-oriented community in South Dade. Located just west of U.S. 1, Quail Roost Station is directly connected via a covered walkway to the brand-new Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) station on SW 184th Street, one of the 14 stations along the South Dade TransitWay. This offers unparalleled connection to the first-ever BRT service in our county’s history, scheduled to start operating this year.
We are planning to run an express service on the TransitWay from Homestead to Dadeland and back on weekdays, providing a quicker, faster, and greener connection across our county for South Dade residents. With our new electric vehicles manufactured by industry leader, New Flyer, the TransitWay will align with our goals for a more resilient county this Earth Month and all year long.
I am very proud of all the work that DTPW is doing to contribute to our goals. To have a world-class public transportation system, we are investing in what fuels the future: clean energy. Together, we are moving Miami-Dade into an even brighter future for all.
With immense gratitude,
Daniella Levine Cava
Mayor, Miami-Dade County
Working together for success
I am truly honored to join the Miami-Dade County Department of Transportation and Public Works as Director and CEO, working alongside a team of dedicated public servants. Together, we will continue to strive towards our vision of being the world’s best transportation provider. With a focus on customer service, we will get back to basics in addition to major project and program delivery, including our SMART Program with many exciting developments on the horizon.
With a unified front, we will strategically address opportunities for efficiency and innovation. We will also prioritize listening and transparency.
I personally want to thank Interim Director Ferrer-Diaz for his excellent leadership during the transition. He successfully moved forward the Department's objectives and has done so with resolve, integrity, courage and kindness. I appreciate his ongoing support and guidance moving forward and that of Deputy Director and Chief of Transit Operations Sean Adgerson.
I pledge to keep you and our customers at the heart of everything we do and to work together with the community, Mayor Daniella Levine Cava, the Board of County Commissioners, and our agency partners to advance critical transportation projects for residents, visitors and industry.
Thank you,

Connecting industry innovators to drive mobility forward
Miami-Dade continues to emerge as a hub for transportation innovation, attracting industry leaders, policymakers, disruptors, and investors focused on reimagining how we move. One way we are achieving this is by hosting world-class industry events such as CoMotion MIAMI. This year, Miami-Dade County and DTPW are again welcoming the world’s leading mobility and transportation innovators at this premier annual event which is being held at the Miami Dade College Wolfson Campus on April 29 and 30.
CoMotion MIAMI provides a global platform for both public and private sector leaders to connect, share insights, and forge new partnerships that will drive the next generation of sustainable mobility. In the afternoon of the second day of the event, DTPW will also present its annual Mobility Champion Awards to the individuals and organizations leading the way in advancing transportation solutions. The County’s Vice Chairman Kionne L. McGhee, the Citizens’ Independent Transportation Trust, COMTO Miami Chapter, Transit Alliance Miami, and Miami Marlins are among this year’s winners who will be honored with this recognition.
Companies continue reintroducing a 5-day office work modality for greater collaboration, morale, and sense of community, but it also means more cars on the road and a longer commute. However, there is no need to stress, as we have great news. You can take Miami-Dade Transit and avoid the hassle of rush hour, parking, and travel anxieties.
With options such as Metrorail and Metromover, you can skip the traffic and arrive at your destination quicker. You’ll save on gas, parking, and maintenance costs, which is always a plus.
Transit also gives you an opportunity to be productive on your way to work or home. Whether you’re checking your emails or catching up on social media, you have the comfort and time to do it. The best part is you can ride at a reduced price through our Corporate and Student Discount programs. So, leave the keys at home and grab an EASY Card today!
Art has always been an important part of all successful society, used to express emotions and tell stories. It shapes the world around us, giving individuals an artistic outlet. On April 15, together with millions around the country, DTPW celebrated World Art Day, a time to reflect on the impact art has.
Miami-Dade Transit takes pride in incorporating art within transportation with the Art in Public Places program, which is meant to enrich the public environment and protect the artistic nature of the County. Along the Metrorail and Metromover system, riders can find some of Miami’s most remarkable public artworks. From a decorated ceramic mosaic ceiling representing Miami’s multicultural community to a spiraling sculpture, there is something for everyone to admire. As you hop on your next stop, take a moment to appreciate the art around you. It’s a great start or end to your day with Transit.
Building seamless connections for county residents
Committed to tackling rising living costs, Miami-Dade County is making strides once again with the development of Quail Roost Station, a Transit-Oriented Community (TOC) that is directly adjacent to one of the 14 new, state-of-the-art Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) stations. This month, Mayor Daniella Levine Cava and Miami-Dade County Board of County Commissioners Vice Chairmen Kionne L. McGhee, alongside key project stakeholders and the County’s departments of Transportation and Public Works and Housing and Community Development, came together to celebrate the grand opening of Phase 1 of Quail Roast Station.
Phase 1 of Quail Roost Station, located on SW 184th Street, will feature 200 affordable housing units ranging from studios to 5-bedroom apartments. Given its proximity to one of the 14 BRT stations, the project seamlessly addresses two key needs in the community: housing and transportation. Quail Roost Station is a six-phase revitalization project with the construction of the third phase scheduled to begin this spring.
Improving the transportation experience through innovation
In partnership with Miami-Dade Innovation Authority (MDIA), the County’s Office of Innovation and Economic Development and CoMotion, DTPW launched a Miami-Dade Innovation Authority Challenge in 2024.
Aimed squarely at early-to-growth stage tech startups, the initiative’s main goal is to identify companies that can bring innovative solutions to the table that enhance Transportation Visibility in Miami-Dade County. As part of the challenge’s process, startups were encouraged to submit entries that leverage technologies like AI, machine learning, and real-time traffic data to create solutions that can reroute vehicles, improve pedestrian flow and safety, and even help public transit adapt to roadway conditions in real-time.
Fast forward to April 2025, and after a competitive review of cutting-edge proposals, the MDIA will reveal the four Transportation Visibility Challenge finalists at CoMotion Miami on Tuesday, April 29th. Each finalist will receive a $100,000 investment which includes a pilot agreement with Miami-Dade County. These startups leverage AI, digital twins, predictive modeling, and real-time analytics to revolutionize how Miami-Dade manages congestion during high-impact events such as the annual Ultra Music Festival and the upcoming FIFA World Cup in 2026. This partnership presents a unique opportunity for startups to revolutionize transportation visibility in Miami-Dade County, while also enhancing safety, reducing congestion, and improving the overall transportation experience in one of the nation’s fastest growing urban areas.
Employee Spotlight – Ikeria Williams, Bridging connections in Miami
For Ikeria Williams, becoming a bridge operator wasn’t part of her original plan—but it turned out to be a perfect fit. Inspired by her mother, who also works in the field, Ikeria made the switch to Miami-Dade County nearly five years ago, and she hasn’t looked back.
“The pay is good, the view is amazing, and my coworkers and boss make it such a great environment,” she says. “It’s a blessing to have this opportunity.”
As a bridge operator, Ikeria plays a key role in keeping Miami’s roadways and waterways moving efficiently. She ensures that boats pass safely while maintaining the flow of traffic on the roads above. It’s a job that requires focus, coordination, and quick thinking - especially during peak boating hours or when mechanical challenges arise. But for Ikeria, the best part is the simple joy of seeing people wave as they pass by.
Her passion for the job goes beyond the day-to-day tasks. She takes pride in knowing her work contributes to the safety and efficiency of Miami-Dade’s transportation network, allowing residents and visitors to enjoy the city’s waterways without disruption.
With dedication, resilience, and a love for what she does, Ikeria Williams is one of many in DTPW helping to keep Miami-Dade moving, one bridge at a time.
Your feedback matters - South Dade Trail Public Meetings
Next month, DTPW will be hosting 2 important public meetings regarding the South Dade Trail. The meetings will be conducted as an informal open house with a short presentation of the proposed project, including potential improvements as well as social, cultural, and environmental impacts, followed by requests for feedback from those in attendance. Our goal is for the meeting to be as informative and interactive as possible.
They will be conducted in person and virtually and held from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on the following days: Tuesday, May 6th and Wednesday, May 7th. We encourage the public to participate, as the South Dade Trail will enhance the surrounding neighborhood and provide an enriching experience for the community. We hope to see you there!
Illegal ridesharing has been on the rise, with unlicensed drivers offering rides to unaware passengers for cash. Ride-share services can only accept payments via an app or digital network like Uber or Lyft. Cash compensation is illegal and poses a threat to consumers who are looking for a ride to their destination. Luckily, DTPW’s For-Hire Transportation team has been working hard conducting joint undercover operations with Miami-Dade County Sheriff’s Office to search for, and in some cases detain, those providing illegal services.
March was a successful month, with 15 violators cited around PortMiami and Miami International Airport. To consumers, always book a ride through a ride-share app and never accept an offer for a ride in exchange for cash compensation. Be smart, as illegal drivers are sometimes displaying Uber and Lyft trademarks without authorization from those companies to deceive consumers. The County will continue taking action to protect passengers so that they can arrive safely at their destination!
